Have you ever found yourself impatiently drumming your fingers on your desk because your system Startup takes forever to respond? Have you checked the Task Manager and found that Bcmsmmsg.exe seems to be responsible for the delay?
If you have, you are not alone. Many computer users have found themselves in a similar predicament, and although a delay could not strictly be termed a computer error, it is nonetheless irritating. Thus, a solution or fix to this issue must be found.
Many users do not recognize Bcmsmmsg.exe and fear that they have been the victim of a virus or spy-ware attack. However, this process is not a virus, Trojan or some other form of malware. The file is actually a driver for Broadcomm’s BCM Voice Modems. The most likely reason you have Bcmsmmsg.exe on your system is because the application came with your computer when you first bought it.
What does Bcmsmmsg.exe do?
The Bcmsmmsg.exe file is an important component of BCM voice modems. Bcmsmmsg is a part of the Broadcom Soft Modem Messaging Applet. This utility is usually used for dial-up modems. Whenever your computer communicates with the BCM voice modem installed on your PC, the bcmsmmsg.exe process is used. This ensures that information can flow smoothly between the two.
Where can I find the file?
You can find the file in
C:\WINDOWS\BCMSMMSG.exe. But be aware that certain malware disguise themselves by using file names similar to legitimate program file names. Always check the spelling and the location of any file you are unsure of.
You may also want to check the file size. The known file sizes on Windows XP are 122880 and 65536 bytes. If a file pretending to be Bcmsmmsg exceeds the known file sizes, be wary.
What should I do?
This file is required to run at Startup and is critical to the performance of the voice modem, so removing or disabling the process is not recommended. The executable runs as a system process and does not pose any risk to your system. However, if you do not have or no longer use the BCM voice modem, you have no need for this particular driver and you may choose to stop the process in this case.
We also recommend that you run a regular registry scan with the help of an efficient registry tool, such as RegServe to repair any error left behind by the Bcmsmmsg.exe file. Running a registry scan can also identify other errors that you may not be aware of, and also prevent registry bloat that can adversely affect your system.
Just like any machine, your computer performs its best when clean. Keep your computer free and clean from viruses, spyware, malware and errors by using good antivirus, anti-spyware and registry cleaning programs.
