Cause of the Error
The issue occurs when installing an application can corrupt its performance counter strings and stop them from working.
When an application with Performance Monitor (PM) counters is installed, Windows backs up your registry entries related to the Performance Monitor (PM) in the PerfStringBackup.ini file. Should the new application set up prove to be a failure, Windows still has the previous registry entries to revert back to. You can revert to this backup file, by performing the following steps:
- Look for the latest PerfStringBackup.ini that you have.
- Restore the file from the backup made before you installed the new application.
- Run the following command to restore the registry settings stored in this file:
- Restart your PC after the process is complete.
