While working on Windows Vista, Windows XP Professional Edition Version – SP1, or Windows 2000 Server – SP4 computers, you may receive the following error message when your PC boots up:

Error message: "CNTAoSMgr.exe - Application Error ------ The instruction at "0x0041B942" Referenced memory at "0x00181000". The memory could not be "read""

The issue may recur even after you uninstall and then reinstall the OfficeScan client.

Cause of the Error

The issue occurs when installing an application can corrupt its performance counter strings and stop them from working.

Resolution Method

When an application with Performance Monitor (PM) counters is installed, Windows backs up your registry entries related to the Performance Monitor (PM) in the PerfStringBackup.ini file. Should the new application set up prove to be a failure, Windows still has the previous registry entries to revert back to. You can revert to this backup file, by performing the following steps:

  1. Look for the latest PerfStringBackup.ini that you have.
  2. Restore the file from the backup made before you installed the new application.
  3. Run the following command to restore the registry settings stored in this file:
    Lodctr /r:PerfStringBackup.ini
  4. Restart your PC after the process is complete.

Regular registry cleaning using a quality registry scanner can not only identify problems, but can also fix them before they become a troublesome issue.
